Overtime rule
Common examples: the US FLSA rule of overtime after 40 hours in a workweek (7 days, 40 hours, 1.5×), and the longer 7(k) work periods many fire departments use. Your employer's rules and your contract decide — this is not legal advice.

How the 28-day continental cycle is built
A continental shift pattern covers 24 hours with three 8-hour shifts — early, late and night — and four crews. On any day three crews are working and one is off. Each crew follows the same 28-day sequence, a week apart from the next crew:
- Week one: 2 earlies, 2 lates, 3 nights.
- Then 2 days off, 2 earlies, 3 lates, 2 nights.
- Then 2 days off, 3 earlies, 2 lates, 2 nights.
- Then 3 days off, and the cycle starts again.
As letters, with D for early, S for late (swing) and N for night, Crew A's cycle is DDSSNNNOODDSSSNNOODDDSSNNOOO: 21 shifts in 28 days, no more than 7 in a row and a 3-day break at the end. The chart shows all four crews from Monday, January 5, 2026.
Forward rotation: early, then late, then night
Every block in the continental moves forward through the day: earlies, then lates, then nights. Each change of shift starts later than the one before, so you go to bed later rather than earlier — which shift-work guidance generally recommends, because most people find it easier to stay up late than to fall asleep early. The short blocks also mean no more than three nights in a row. The trade-off is that you change shift type often, roughly every two or three days, rather than settling into one for a week as on a DuPont or a Southern swing.
Hours, overtime and weekends
Twenty-one 8-hour shifts every 28 days is 42 hours a week on average. Over 2026 each crew works 273–274 shifts; Crew A in our example works 274 shifts, 92 of them nights, for 2,192 hours. Week by week the load is uneven — the first week holds seven shifts in a row:
| Week | Sun–Sat | Hours | Over 40 | Mon–Sun | Hours | Over 40 |

With overtime after 40 hours in a Sunday-to-Saturday week, Crew A earns 104 overtime hours in 2026; counted Monday to Sunday the long first week is 56 hours and the total roughly doubles. Common examples: the US FLSA rule of overtime after 40 hours in a workweek; in the UK, the Working Time Regulations limit average weekly hours rather than setting an overtime rate. Your employer's rules and your contract decide. Full weekends off are rarer than on 12-hour rotations — one in every four weeks, 13 in 2026 — because there are only three short breaks per cycle.
| Pattern | Cycle | Crews | Shift | Avg hours / week | Shifts in 2026 | Full weekends off | Longest run on | Longest break |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Continental | 28 days | 4 | 8 h | 42 | 273–274 | 13 | 7 days | 3 days |
| Southern swing | 28 days | 4 | 8 h | 42 | 273–274 | 13 | 7 days | 3 days |
| DuPont | 28 days | 4 | 12 h | 42 | 182–183 | 26 | 4 days | 7 days |
| 4 on 4 off | 8 days | 4 | 12 h | 42 | 181–184 | 18–21 | 4 days | 4 days |
Earlies and lates: the UK continental rota
In the UK the continental is usually written as a rota of earlies, lates and nights, often with shifts at 06:00–14:00, 14:00–22:00 and 22:00–06:00. To match, open More options in the generator, set the three start times, choose Monday as the first day of the week and the UK holiday region so bank holidays appear on the calendar — or load this UK continental rota with those settings already in place. US sites tend to say day, swing and night (or "mids"), and the default 07:00, 15:00 and 23:00 starts reflect that.
Pros and cons of the continental pattern
Pros
- 8-hour shifts, so working days still leave time for life.
- Forward rotation and no more than three nights in a row.
- Every crew shares earlies, lates and nights equally.
- Three crews on site every day eases handovers and cover.
Cons
- 21 commutes per 28 days, against 14 on a 12-hour rotation.
- Frequent changes of shift type.
- A seven-shift stretch in the first week.
- Only one full weekend off every four weeks.
Continental vs DuPont, Southern swing and 4 on 4 off
All four rotations give 42 hours a week. The Southern swing (also in the generator) uses the same 8-hour shifts but in week-long blocks — 7 days, 2 off, 7 swings, 2 off, 7 nights, 3 off — so you change shift type only three times a cycle but work seven in a row each time; it gives 13 full weekends off in 2026. The DuPont covers the same operation with 12-hour shifts: 14 shifts per 28 days instead of 21, and a 7-day break. 4 on 4 off is the simplest 12-hour alternative, an 8-day cycle with four-day breaks. If your site is choosing between 8 and 12 hours, the 12-hour shift schedule guide lists every 12-hour option, including the 2-2-3, its Panama variant and the Pitman; fire services should see the firefighter shift calendar and the Kelly schedule.
A note on 12-hour "continental" rotas
Some employers use "continental" for any rotating 24/7 rota, including 12-hour ones such as two days, two nights and four days off. The pattern on this page is the 8-hour, three-shift version. For a 12-hour rota, choose the closest preset — DDNNOO, 4 on 4 off or DuPont — or build your exact sequence in the custom cycle builder on the shift calendar generator, which checks that your crews cover every day.
Continental shift pattern questions
What is the continental shift pattern?
The continental shift pattern is a 28-day rotation for four crews on 8-hour shifts. Each crew works blocks of early (day), late (swing) and night shifts in that order — 2 earlies, 2 lates, 3 nights, 2 off; 2 earlies, 3 lates, 2 nights, 2 off; 3 earlies, 2 lates, 2 nights, 3 off — so three crews are at work every day and one is off.
How many hours a week is a continental shift pattern?
42 hours on average: 21 eight-hour shifts in every 28 days. Single weeks range from 32 to 56 hours. Over 2026 each crew works 273–274 shifts, 2,192 hours for Crew A.
What are earlies, lates and nights?
They are the UK names for the three 8-hour shifts of a 24-hour day: earlies in the morning, lates in the afternoon and evening, and nights. In the US the same shifts are usually called days, swings and nights (or mids). The generator labels them Day, Swing and Night and lets you set the start times.
Is the continental a forward-rotating shift pattern?
Yes. Within each block the shifts move from early to late to night, so each change starts later in the day than the last. That direction is generally recommended in shift-work guidance because it is easier to go to bed later than earlier.
Is there a 12-hour continental shift pattern?
The name is sometimes used loosely for 12-hour rotations such as two days, two nights and then days off. For those, pick the matching 12-hour pattern in the generator — DDNNOO, 4 on 4 off or the DuPont — or build your own with a custom cycle.
How many weekends off does the continental pattern give?
One full weekend in every four weeks — 13 in 2026 per crew. With cycle day 1 on a Monday it is a Friday-to-Sunday break, the three days off that close the cycle.
