    Why 12-hour shifts are popular

A 12-hour shift schedule covers the full day with two shifts, day and night, instead of three 8-hour shifts. Four crews can then cover a 24/7 operation, each working about 182 shifts a year instead of the 260 days of a Monday-to-Friday job, for roughly the same hours. Staff get fewer commutes and longer stretches of days off; employers get two handovers a day instead of three. The cost is the length of the working day itself — twelve hours plus travel leaves little room for anything else on a work day — which is why the choice of rotation matters so much.

The rotating 12-hour patterns, one by one

    DuPont

Four crews on a 28-day cycle that mixes day and night blocks — 4 nights, 3 off, 3 days, 1 off, 3 nights, 3 off, 4 days, 7 off. Its signature is the 7-day break every four weeks; its cost is one heavy week with six shifts in seven days. 42 hours a week. See the DuPont schedule calendar.

    2-2-3 and Panama

Four crews on a 14-day cycle of 2 on, 2 off, 3 on, 2 off, 2 on, 3 off; no more than 3 shifts in a row and every other weekend off when the cycle lines up. Crews can stay on days or nights, or rotate every two weeks. See the 2-2-3 schedule calendar and the Panama schedule explainer.

    Pitman (2-3-2)

The same 14-day loop as the 2-2-3 entered at a different point: 2 on, 3 off, 2 on, 2 off, 3 on, 2 off. Common in police patrol. 42 hours a week and 182–183 shifts a year. See the Pitman schedule calendar.

    4 on 4 off

Four shifts, four days off, on an 8-day cycle that drifts one weekday later each week. Every break is 4 days, but there are only 18–21 full weekends off a year. Can rotate as four days, four off, four nights, four off. See the 4 on 4 off shift pattern calendar.

    DDNNOO (2 days, 2 nights, 2 off)

Three crews on a 6-day cycle, DDNNOO. Every crew works two days then two nights, so each date still has a day crew and a night crew — but with only three crews the average is 56 hours a week and the break is only 2 days. Load DDNNOO in the generator.

    3 on 3 off

Four crews on a 6-day cycle, DDDOOO: three shifts, three days off, 42 hours a week. Simple and even, with fixed days and nights or a 12-day rotating version; like 4 on 4 off it drifts through the week, giving 17–18 full weekends off. Load 3 on 3 off in the generator.

    4 on 2 off

Three crews on a 6-day cycle, DDDDOO, with two crews on day shift every day — a pattern for 7-day day-time operations rather than 24-hour cover. 56 hours a week and 2 days off at a time. Load 4 on 2 off in the generator.

How to choose a 12-hour rotation

Start with the hours. Four-crew rotations average 42 hours a week; three-crew rotations average 56 and need fewer people but much more overtime. Then decide what the time off should look like:

    • Weekends: the 2-2-3 and Pitman give every other weekend off when cycle day 1 falls on a suitable weekday; the DuPont gives two weekends in every four weeks.
    • Long breaks: the DuPont's 7 days off is the longest; 4 on 4 off gives 4 days after every block.
    • Short stretches: the 2-2-3, Pitman and 3 on 3 off never go beyond three shifts in a row.
    • Predictability: 14- and 28-day cycles keep the same weekdays; 6- and 8-day cycles drift, so people rely on a printed or phone calendar.

When you have a shortlist, load each one in the generator with the same start date and compare the stats panel: shifts, nights, full weekends off and overtime for your own year. If none fits, the custom builder on the shift calendar generator lets you write any cycle up to 84 days and checks that your crews cover every day. For 8-hour rotations see the Continental shift pattern (42 hours a week over 28 days), and for 24-hour shifts the firefighter shift calendar and Kelly schedule.

Scheduling and handover tips for rotating shifts

These are scheduling practices, not medical advice. Rotations that change shift type usually work better rotating forward — days before nights — than backward. Limiting the number of nights in a row, and leaving a full day off after a block of nights, gives people time to switch back. Many rotas aim for at least 11 hours between the end of one shift and the start of the next, the minimum daily rest under the EU Working Time Directive. A short, written handover at each change of shift keeps information from getting lost when the crew that knows a problem goes home. Finally, publish the calendar for the whole year as early as you can: rotating shifts are much easier to live with when everyone can see the weddings, school holidays and long breaks months in advance — which is what this generator is for.

    12-hour shift schedule questions

What is a rotating shift schedule?

A rotating shift schedule is one where your working days — and often your shift times — change on a repeating cycle instead of being the same every week. Crews follow the same cycle at different starting points so that, together, they cover every day. The DuPont, 2-2-3, Pitman and 4 on 4 off are all rotating shift schedules.

What is a 12 hour rotating shift schedule?

A 12 hour rotating shift schedule covers 24 hours with two 12-hour shifts, day and night, and rotates crews through a repeating cycle of work and days off. With four crews the average is 42 hours a week; with three crews it is 56.

Which 12-hour schedule gives the most weekends off?

Among the four-crew rotations, the DuPont, 2-2-3 and Pitman give 26 full weekends off in 2026 (the 2-2-3 and Pitman only when cycle day 1 is on a suitable weekday), and 4 on 4 off gives 18–21. The three-crew patterns give far fewer, around 8–9.

Which 12-hour schedule has the longest break?

The DuPont, with 7 days off in a row every 28 days. 4 on 4 off gives 4 days off after every block; the 2-2-3 and Pitman never give more than 3.

How many hours a year is a 12-hour shift schedule?

On a four-crew rotation, about 182 shifts and 2,190 hours a year — for example 2,184 hours for DuPont Crew A in 2026. On a three-crew rotation such as DDNNOO, about 243 shifts and 2,916 hours.
